An SCS 'EDU' about HOAs*

Image
#HOA #Factbook source is a nationally-known watchdog of matters followed in the #SocialCurrentSee #CIDs #ALTACITIES https://t.co/XPAOS2HnwL — Mike Foxworth (@ALTALOMAN) January 18, 2016 * Of course, the terms (acronyms) of our headline are easily defined: SCS = social current see ; EDU = education; HOAs = homeowner associations. This site is focused on those topics, constantly looking for sources and content that help homeowners (titleholders) in common interest developments (aka HOAs) to better understand the challenge of living and operating in these locations. Since April 2000, George K. Staropoli has testified before legislative committees in Arizona, Florida and Nevada and his opinions and views have appeared in the national and local media. He has been quoted in Private Neighborhoods and the Transformation of Local Government (2005), AARP Policy Institute Homeowners Bill of Rights proposal (2006), and acknowledged as a leading advocate in the Thomson – Wes...

No 'silver lining' yet in NV HOA case

Image
Granted, the following story from California's eastern neighbor, Nevada (NV), is probably an exception and extreme case as to how HOA control can go wrong, but the complicity of the legal establishment in the cover up of details must be a cause for alarm.  Taking up the case for transparency, accountability, and due-diligence is the NV press, led by the respected Las Vegas Review-Journal. Given the details of the case that are known, one can't help but muse that the prosecution case cover-up is due to possible incrimination of other authorities in high office either in Nevada or beyond. NV court rules on HOA foreclosures

Image
The last thing any homeowner wishes to happen is foreclosure on his home.  For sure, that problem is one of the worst financial disasters for any homeowner, but it is also a disaster for lenders, notably so if the dwelling is located within an HOA.  Typically, HOAs have been in a privileged position on foreclosures, that is, they stand at the front of the line before banks and mortgage lenders due to a lot of reasons.  But the world may be changing when some states (like Nevada) change the game. The film your HOA doesn't want you to see

Image
Now two years after initial release, the film HOAX follows an investigative reporter, homeowners, and HOA reform activists as they illustrate shocking evidence of financial and psychological hardships throughout Texas and Nevada. A few of these people, including the filmmaker, are the subject of adverse actions from the very homeowners associations created to help them. Prior to this production, in 2006, Rodney Gray produced and directed the documentary short, A Tenant’s Action , that explored the humiliation and fear of retaliation from landlords, he and other tenants have gone through as a lived experience in Philadelphia, PA. This documentary showed tenants as underdogs, standing up against private and corporate landlords who take their money, bullies them, and at times puts their lives in danger with inadequate maintenance, unsanitary conditions, and fire code violations. This documentary won a Freese Foundational Award at Temple University in 2006. [ View the story "H...
